We left off talking about A Magic Bullet To Financing Your Film, and I take it the wheels are turning in your heads :)
I want to emphasize that building value in your project, creating something finance-ready and worthy, is a step by step process. In fact, Prema commented in the blog post how she’s taken a step approach over the course of a couple of years to building value, cobbling together funds for the next step along the way. And this method is totally fine! It may take a little longer but by continuing to stay the course on building more and more value, you’ll get there in the end.
For example, that was the subject of the first course I ever taught on this topic – The Producers Incubator. That course is now included for free as part of FS membership, and is worth the price of admission alone if you’re looking for a step by step on what to do to keep working towards finance-ready.
For another 48 hours you can get an FS membership for one payment of $199 for an entire year, plus get 4 bonus months. So that’s 16 months total which should be enough time for some step by step action :)

Some of the biggest challenges
In my experience this year I think some of the biggest challenges producers face (aside from money) in the journey to building value in a project are many….
For starters, it can take more time than you ever thought was necessary. Months seem to slip away while you’re waiting on ‘other people’. My advice? Keep working and moving and hustling to lessen the impact that these long periods of time take on your overall production ecosystem.
Then there’s just the inherent collaborative nature of filmmaking which oftentimes brings competing personalities together which sometimes leads to people coming and going from a project during these nascent and tenuous development stages. Stay the course.
Getting legal ducks in a row – I see many people skimp in this area but I learned this the hard way. Don’t skimp!
What about you? I’d love to hear more from you guys on the challenges you’ve faced this year in the development process and see if I can help or point you in the right direction. Let’s continue discussing below shall we?
Let me know what you think….
