I hope you had a great weekend and getting ready for the holidays? I’m still in full throttle mode – hard to believe slowing down by the end of the week for Christmas LOL.
I’ve been hearing from some of you guys who are now starting to receive feedback from companies that you met at AFM and there’s a few interesting trends I’ve noticed….
In a few cases I had filmmakers tell me that they are NOT interested in entertaining offers from sales agents without MG’s since they’ll have no skin in the game.
The thing is, and a point I want to get across is…..even if a sales agent or distributor isn’t paying you an upfront advance, they still have skin in the game just by taking on your film. They are still investing company resources and bandwidth to get it to market. Yes they may be recouping some hard costs as part of recoupable expenses, but assuming you’re in business with a legit company, there’s still a lot of elbow grease and hard work that goes into selling your film. Of course I can speak from experience here since I used to be a sales agent myself.
In fact, I hear this refrain a lot from filmmakers who inquire about my EP Services that they want me to go raise money for their films and ‘take a commission later’ to prove I have skin in the game. I’m not even sure how to respond to that since for those of you who realize what actually goes into putting together a film that is finance ready and then putting together pieces of the financing puzzle – not least of which involves 20 years of my personal network and contacts and relationship equity – there’s a LOT of skin in the game!
I was talking to a distributor recently about this whole issue and he said he was astounded by the amount of filmmakers that think they are entitled to an advance on their film with no name cast and questionable production quality – when in fact, the sales agent is the one taking all the risk by putting out your film to their trusted buyer network.
I’m curious what your thoughts are on this and welcome a discussion…. let’s keep talking in the comments section below.
And if you want to dig in more, you can check out this video training I did for FS members called Foreign Sales Strategies or another training I did a while back but that is still relevant called What Are Sales Agents Bringing To The Table.
And that’s a wrap for today everyone. I hope you have a fabulous day ahead and I’ll speak to you again soon…
