Tomorrow SXSW kicks off and as I’ve mentioned before I have a film premiering on opening night, and I’m looking forward to taking you guys along on the journey with me on things work out for us distribution-wise.
When your film premieres at a Tier 1 festival things can go either way – I mean ideally we’ll get picked up in an all rights acquisition deal while still at the festival, but there’s always the chance we’ll leave the festival without a deal and be looking at less ideal options. In either case though, we reverse engineered the project to be made at the SAG ULB level so even in the worse case, we’ll see a profit. (yay for our investors!)
Also, we decided to work with a major domestic rep (which is really only available to you if you are premiering at a Tier 1 festival funny enough) who will hopefully drive up the value and price of our film and also position it as as a ‘must buy’.
So let’s see! I’ll report back with intimate details as soon as I can and am able to spill the beans :)
In the mean time I’m preparing to just enjoy being at a festival that is so packed with activities and opportunities to be exposed to new ideas. For those of you going, I think the biggest value of being there lies in the potential relationships you can build and exposure to new ideas and ways of doing things you’ll encounter.
In other words, like Sundance, SXSW isn’t necessarily a place to be pitching new projects as all the buyers there are focused on the films playing in the festival – so relax, forget trying to pitch your projects, and be open to learning and observing and making new friends and colleagues.
In the background to all that, of course I’m pitching like crazy outside of the festival. One of the biggest mistakes I see with producers around me is they complain about lack of opportunities, but they are not dedicating all day every day to pitching new business. Laziness…inertia…fear of being rejected all take hold and pretty soon your pipeline is empty with no new productions on the horizon.
What about you? What are you working on this week to push all your projects forward? Let me know what you’re up to in the comments section below….
