More Producing, Less Talking In 2018 (& other theses)

Stacey Parks
December 30, 2017

Just two days left in the year….how are you feeling?

I did an exercise yesterday where I went through my 2017 calendar month by month and listed out all the highlights and lowlights from each month. You know what stood out the most? All the positive experiences I had at the events and festivals I attended – from Real Screen in Jan, to SXSW in March, to MIPCOM in October., and Science Congress in Nov… plus lots of trips to see buyers and clients in NYC and London in between.

The other day I mentioned how I’m bullish on digital series for 2018… well, I’m going to be bullish again on events and film markets too. In the next three months alone there’s NATPE, Sundance, Real Screen, EFM/Berlin, SXSW, MIPTV, and probably some that I’m leaving out. Of course I can’t make it to all of them, but if I can commit to one a quarter, that tends to keep the momentum going for me. In other words, from the contacts and meetings and education I gather at any of these events, it’s enough to keep me busy for a few months afterwards creating new business and opportunities. So it’s always ROI positive.

Speaking of – if you’re interested in working together for one of the upcoming Film/TV Markets and leveraging the experience as best as possible for positive ROI, tomorrow 12/31 is the last day take advantage of the $1000 off Film Market Consulting promo so we can get a head start on the year. What about you? What does your year end audit look like and what are some of the positive experiences that stood out? I’d love to know in the comments section below…

What’s Coming In 2018

In terms of what else I’d like to do more of in 2018….

I’ll keep shooting/producing more digital series and mastering that format and business model, working with networks, platforms, and brands.

I’d like to keep documenting that journey for you on Instagram (which I started this year), and on the Startup Filmmaker Podcast (which I didn’t do at all this year) – and switch things up a bit from where I left off in 2016,  graduating from interviews with filmmakers and film distributors to some of the newer models of diversified media production, innovative financing and distribution models, platforms and formats, and also TV.

I’ll keep documenting for you guys here in my emails and on the blog. Possibly add You Tube or Facebook Watch to the mix?

And as always, I’ll continue to go deep and really unpack things inside the FS member community. We’ve brought back the yearly membership for those of you want to look in a membership to our private professional community in one single payment. You can check it out here and join us for an entire year of deep dives, online networking, and intel sharing.

To sum things up, my overall thesis right now is – creators and producers who diversity will win. If you stay stuck on one single format like feature films and not grow beyond that, you will lose. Most indie production companies only have one move. Well having only one move will put you out of business… you need to have 8 or 9 different moves to thrive in today’s media landscape.

Again, I’d love to know your thoughts and what you’re doing to grow and evolve in 2018! Hit me up in the comments….
