I was talking to a client yesterday about self distribution and what’s amazing to me is how many more tools are available right now versus even a year ago for promoting a self release. While the ability to ‘organically’ promote (aka for free) on the social platforms evaporated a couple years ago, all the major social platforms have paid advertising options which can present a really good value as part of your overall self distribution budget.
The catch is that most producers don’t realize there’s price tag that exists with self distribution and usually don’t have any budget to work with at all.
So while there are many drawbacks to traditional distribution models, self distribution is no walk in the park either :)
When I work with clients on distribution we usually craft a custom hybrid strategy which involves some traditional and some direct distribution activities depending on the film type, cast level, genre, budget available, and several other factors.
How The Film Markets Fit Into The Equation…
Film markets like AFM, EFM, and Cannes are great places to launch traditional distribution activities. For example with EFM just behind us, all my sales agent contacts are calling me up and looking for films they can launch at MIPTV and Cannes (then after Cannes the same will happen for AFM, and so on).
So if you are in the midst of completing a film right now and are thinking about including traditional distribution options as part of your equation, definitely start working on your outreach to sales agents now. One thing I implore you to consider though is don’t take the first deal offered to you. Shop around. Meet or talk to as many as possible. Check references with producers.
I’ll be working one on one with a small handful of new clients for upcoming MIPTV and Cannes – walking films directly into my distributor contacts and negotiating fair deals that are filmmaker friendly. If you’d like to work together in this capacity, you should start by visiting the Film Market Consulting page and seeing what’s involved, and then emailing me details on your project so I can determine if I can truly help you or not.
And through the end of the month (this Tuesday 2/28) I’m offering $500 off the regular fee on a first come, first served basis.
Whether we work together or not I wanted to give you a head’s up on upcoming MIPTV and Cannes and get you to start thinking about it.
And on that note, I’ll wrap things up for today.! I have you have a wonderful weekend ahead and I’ll speak to you again soon…
