I’m in the process of strategically producing a couple of projects right now and prepping them for Cannes, and as I go through the process I’m finding that part of being a strategic producer means not only having multiple Plans in place (A,B,C and so on) but also having the ability to execute on several fronts simultaneously. For instance, packaging is pursued while at the same time whetting the appetites of financiers, distributors, and sales agents. It’s literally like juggling several balls at a time and every day I wake up and have my plan of attack ready for that day. Sounds like I’m going to war, huh? (in many cases I am!)
One thing is certain – the Business Plans I have for each film keep evolving in accordance with progress on the film. Meaning – as elements change and come to fruition on each project, I go in and develop the Business Plan to reflect these changes. What makes this possible is having a solid base template of a Plan to work from. I also am able to customize each Business Plan depending on who I’m giving it to – so it’s always audience-specific.
I wanted to share with this with you guys because I find it’s really helping me during the development and financing process and I’m curious if any of you are also doing the same thing…..
I’m also telling you this because starting tomorrow I’ll be teaching my Five Part Virtual Course called Business Plan 2.0 Building Basics where from Day 1, you’ll be given this very same template that I’m currently using as a course supplement and handout, and I’ll be walking you through step-by-step how to apply it to your project.Throughout the course, you’ll also be given some other sample Business Plans including Sales Projections and other financials so you can create a Plan that is right for your specific project.
But back to Strategic Producing….
What are you doing to move your project along on multiple fronts simultaneously? Are you fearlessly contacting agents and managers to package your script? Which presentation materials are you using to supplement your pitch – Business Plans, Marketing/Pitch Packets, Sizzle Reels, and so on? I’m finding that even a little bit of supplemental material can go a long way on my projects….
I look forward to your comments below!
